The InSideOut Initiative is a nationwide movement, supported by the NFL Foundation, that links student-athletes with transformational coaches in a culture of belonging, helping them grow socially, emotionally, and in character.
WHO THEY ARE
InSideOut works to shift the current win-at-all-costs mentality in sports by redefining the true purpose of athletics within schools—connecting students with coaches who prioritize personal growth and character development within a supportive environment.
Sports taking place in schools does not automatically make them educational. It requires intentional leadership, transformational coaching, and clearly defined learning goals to ensure participation in athletics contributes to each student’s human development.

PROFESSIONAL LEARNING
Through research-based training, school athletic leaders learn to reestablish and reframe the educational value of sports, fostering students’ personal growth.
InSideOut offers a blended, evidence-based professional learning program designed to meet athletic directors and coaches at their current level.
Its comprehensive, multi-session training includes both in-person and virtual workshops, paired with online coursework that encourages reflection and provides continued support through the InSideOut Community of Practice.

Novato High School is proud to be an InSideOut School. Guided by Jody Redman and Joe Ehrmann, the InSideOut Initiative helps shift the existing “win-at-all-costs” sports culture—often measured solely by the scoreboard—into one that views athletics as a meaningful opportunity for human development.
